Why An HTML Sitemap Is Important for SEO

An HTML sitemap is a page that contains all essential links to your website. According to the Google Webmaster Guidelines, it is helpful for users and necessary for SEO.

If you have an HTML sitemap, your users can find all useful links to your website on a single page. It is the most efficient way to build internal links and distribute link juice to the inner pages. Many bloggers and web admins don’t care about this sitemap at all. Here, we will explain why it is essential and how to build it correctly.

Remember that an HTML sitemap provides all essential links to your website and gives it a complete structure. This page should not contain A to Z links related to your site, but it should include all vital links from which you can reach every single page. Here is an example of my sitemap, where you can find every link I posted daily.

Why HTML sitemap is essential:

HTML sitemaps are valuable for human users as they can find a quick and easy way to navigate throughout your website. You can sort all archive links, category links, and page links on a specific page, from which your users can reach every nook and corner of your website.

Like the above picture, an HTML sitemap links from one page to another. This type of linking is essential for SEO because it sends sitewide link juice and helps web crawlers crawl every page of the website.

How to build an HTML sitemap:

To develop a quick HTML sitemap, you can include your blog archives, essential pages, and categories on a single page. You can exclude unimportant and thin pages from your sitemap. Now, place the sitemaps links in your website’s footer area. External links to your sitemap are essential for SEO, as they send link juice to all your pages rather than a single page. Try to build external links pointing to your sitemap, which is much stronger than a link pointing to your homepage because this link-building sends a positive signal to the search engine. It also helps to identify the essential pages by priority.

Designing an HTML sitemap:

HTML Sitemap is not a critical design. It’s effortless to create. However, you should know some basic guidelines while creating an HTML sitemap. These rules are:

  1. Create a link on your Homepage: To provide a quick and easy way to access your sitemap, you can put a link on your homepage. This way, search engines, and human users can easily find and access it.
  2. Make it user-friendly as much as you can: Maybe you think, why should I make a link page user-friendly? But trust me, the sitemap is a more vital page than you think. It’s an overview of your website. So try to make it neat and clean, organized, easy to navigate, and quick-loading. Make sure that your visitors feel comfortable while browsing the sitemap. If website users can easily explore your sitemap, it’s also good for SEO.
  3. Don’t put more than 100 links in a single sitemap: If you want to avoid link spam, it’s necessary to keep your sitemap links fewer than 100. Try to link the page that is important for your website. Don’t list every page and link that exists on a site. Putting every link on a single page could be problematic for users as they may be unable to find the appropriate links. If you have more than 100 essential links to list, break these links into multiple sitemaps and link them all in an Index sitemap. So that search engines and human users can find and follow the link as they need.
  4. Use the vital keyword as an anchor text: It’s a good SEO practice to use the important keywords as an anchor text. It helps users find the right topics and pages they are looking for. It’s also beneficial for search engines because they can easily find essential keywords for this site and structure them accordingly.

Sitemaps are made to present all necessary links. It should be eye-catching, flashy, or dressed rather than a simple outlook. The simplest form of a sitemap is listing links with the appropriate anchor text that describes your site the best. You can use the <ul> <li> and <a> tags to build a sitemap. However, if you don’t want to make your sitemap from scratch, you can pay for the SEO service, which can help you build the sitemap according to your theme. If you have insufficient funds, you can update your website manually, which only requires a few minutes to complete. I hope this information will help you to create your HTML sitemap. Share these tips with friends and other bloggers so that they can include an HTML sitemap on their web pages.
